• fftw - an fft-library (useful for the swh-ladspa-plugins)
• MAD - this is an mp3-library, which comes with a small player (it's also used by mpg321

• oggvorbis - player, encoder/decoder and libraries for the ogg-format. (OGG is a FREE pendant to mp3: You'll love it!)
• mpg321 is a commandline mp3-player. It is VERY simple, fast and good!

• Ecasound - my favourite application for multitrack harddisk recording/FX-processing/mixing
• arecord/aplay - those come with your alsa-drivers. They are small, simple, but useful for testing and simple tasks

• The LADSPA-main-page - here you'll find a starter set of FX and the most basic tools (get it if you want some good effects
• The SWH-LADSPA-plugins - a nice set of amzing FX usable with ecasound and ardour and many more
• sox - is a general soundfile converter with some nice effects (sometimes I use it for chorus)

• Csound - csound is a software-synthesizer to be programmed (rather complicated, but EXTREMELY powerful!) Here you'll find a lot of docs, tools and help, too.
• csound at sourceforge.net - including csound5 vai cvs now! csound version 5! You should have python 2.3 (or later)
• the dssi Disposable SoftSynth Interface plugins
• Fluidsynth - this is a soundfont-based midisynthesizer. Just load a soundfont, connect it to your keyboard and play!

• Timidity++ - a midifile-player. (This one will get you music without another program!) Be sure to downlad the eaw-patches linked from the timidity-site!

• MPlayer is THE multimedia player. It plays a _great_ variety of sound and video formats and still runs under console! (Be sure to also download the codecs linked from the mplayer-site!)
• Cdrecord - this is a commandline cdrecording tool, which proved very useful to me loads of times!
• And of course the great linux-sound.org linux sound & midi software collection by Dave Phillips! Here you'll find everything! If I mention a tool not listed here, go there and find it! :-)
